My wife and I had to let go of her long time companion Nikki today. She was 17 1/2 years old and a really great gentile and loyal dog. Its sad to see a part of your life, even if its just a dog disappear.

I'm so sorry for your loss.
They are not just dogs - they become part of the family. 17 1/2 is a good long life and Nikki was a beautiful dog. Remember the good times

as a dog owner, i will tell you that it is a day you never want to come. but it does and you have to embrace it and look back on your dogs life. and as others have said 17 and a half years is really something for a dog. my dog growing up hit... maybe 14 years if that. you hope it will never come, but it must, and that is part of the contract you acknowledge when you get the dog as in life in general. there is never enough time. i am very sorry for your loss johnny.

Sorry for your loss man! I too was fortunate to have 16 years growing up with "pollo" my German Shepard ... They really are part of the family... and I didn't realize how lucky we were till my wife n I lost Sampson (another Shepard) at only 10 years young :(

Three kids weren't enough so now we have jack the lab... & I hope we have as many years as you guys had with Nikki !

They are never "just a dog", they are a part of the family! So sorry my friend. My buddy was 17 when I had to put her down. Longest relationship I've ever had. :) still miss her! Although I have my hands full with what I have now. Dogs rule.

Sorry you lost your dog, they really do become part of your family. We have had our first dog just six years now. I am not looking forward to the day when she is no longer with us.

I feel you hurt, we had to put our Westie named Tori down this week. She had a good 13 1/2 years with us. Sure get used to having a dog in the home but my plan is to enjoy them but I do want to outlive any animal I may have.

Sorry to hear Johnny. That isn't just a dog... that is a part of your family. I had a dog for 17 yrs as a kid, grew up with him, best of friends with that dog. I was devastated the day that dog was no longer there for me. I know your pain.

MrsFZ1inNH has a cat that we've had for over 21 years now and he is at his end. She is devastated and knows he needs to be put down. I know she cannot do this so I am going to make the appointment and take care of him for her. She doesn't need to see that happen and will say her goodbye while at home. This will be in the next couple weeks.

A pet that has been with you that long is hard to give up but you have to look at the quality of life you afforded your animal and the companionship you received in return. Be happy that you COULD give your pet such a good long life and don't be sad because it is over. Most pets never see that many years of life. We who do have them this long are just that much more fortunate.

RIP Nikki and thank you for being Johnny's friend.

What a sad day. I've had four Shepherds in the last 40 years. Could never be without a dog. The number of people on the short list of those who come before my dog is very short. Friends know not to ask for the list. God speed.

April last year I lost my 12 yo sheppard. Was'nt the first time for me but first for the kids. That made it hard on me too. Sorry for the loss. Like has been said, they become family.

Johnny I am so sorry for the loss of your dog. Nikki had a really good run as not too many dogs live that long. You obviously took very good care of your pet.

For us animal lovers they are never "just a dog" or "just a cat". They are our kids. Give yourself time to grieve.
