FZ1 -07 Turbo (pictures)

Frame cracking is not really a "common" issue on GenII frame but a small percentage of the early bikes did have the issue. It is not so much a design flaw as a manufacturing defect. The vast majority of GenII frames are welded correctly and will hold up just fine.
Mr H, Yamaha might well replace your frame for you but the turbo hardware may throw things off. IMHO a factory replacement frame would be much more desireable than a rewelded cracked one so if it were me, I would pursue the issue with Yamaha . . . .

I presume these forums only scratch the surface of this problem. The amount of bikes alone on these forums that have reported this issue meens that it is more of a "common problem" with the early Gen2 FZ1's. Mine cracked whilst doing a trackday?= probably the best place if you are going to bin it, a frame failure on the road could and most probably be fatal !!!. IMO Yamaha should have recalled all the frames and replaced them, it is not uncommon for manufactures to do this = Aprilia recalled all the V4 RSV engines and swapped them out. I elected to have the frame rewelded locally by a specialist frame repairer i trust, they also checked the whole frame & subframe.

I strongly agree with the above and feel that it is not to late for Yamaha to recall them !! I ride a 06 and am that paranoid of frame cracks that I give both sides a quick check every time I get off her. And yes she is female...

Sorry for being off the topic, what type of quick-shifter are you using & how do you find the bike with/without the flies & spindle?. Cheers

To show the status right now.

One question I am looking for a answer to. Which material this frames are made of?

Found a post on a welding forum where a guy said it was close to 7020 and he said that he had welded it before. Then again i found another post where someone said that yamaha used 5 different alloys, all depends on the bike and the year model. If that's so it would have to be a question for a yamaha tech. If they even have the information.

It is a quite critical part so it would be nice to know.

Hi,

What I know is that they cast aluminum in different hardness in molds which are then welded together.

-What exactly is the type of alloy. and hardness, I can not get hold of.

I think you can try things out and that is certainly going to get into a good and strong welding ...

-but Yamaha's recommendation are not to weld the frames.

Sincerely

1. Blasting
2. Welding
3. Powder lacquering

Will take some time to get it fixed.

sory to go backwards on your thread here . i had a 30mph crash earlier this year where my frame snapped in half down the same welds !

That did not look to nice.

Now my front end has the new Öhlins springs installed (very difficult to change on this bike) and a par of titax manual adjusters on the top.
